Bristol City Women were defeated 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers during a Subway Players Cup match on Sunday afternoon. The game concluded after a controversial offside ruling in stoppage time prevented the Robins from forcing a penalty shootout for the bonus point.
Wolves opened the second half with a goal from Yana Daniels, who tapped in a close-range shot following a cross from the right wing. Bristol City responded shortly after the 60-minute mark when Emily Syme controlled a long-range pass inside the penalty area and placed the ball into the bottom left corner to equalize.
With nine minutes remaining in regulation, Melissa Filis restored the hosts' lead. She scored after a scramble in the Bristol City penalty box. The goal held until stoppage time, when Alexia Apostolakis headed in a free-kick to seemingly equalize the score.
The referee consulted with her assistant and waved the goal off for offside. This decision removed the potential penalty shootout, which would have decided the bonus point. The ruling left the Bristol City coaching staff and players visibly frustrated at the final whistle.
Charlotte Healy, the Bristol City Women manager, expressed disappointment with the outcome. She stated that her team controlled much of the match and created high-quality chances in the first half. Healy believed her side should have been two or three goals ahead before Wolves found the net.
"I thought we had a lot of control in the game, to be honest," Healy told the club media. "We created a lot of good chances in the first half, and ultimately, we probably should be two or three up before they score, so I'm disappointed in the manner of the goal that they scored."
Healy specifically cited the offside call on the late goal as a difficult decision. She noted that Apostolakis had scored her first goal for the team and that the header was well placed. The manager felt the team deserved at least a point given their performance levels throughout the contest.
The defeat places Bristol City in 21st position in the Subway Players Cup standings after four matches. The Robins are four points behind the qualification spots. Two cup games remain on the schedule, featuring opponents Watford and London City Lionesses. The team will return to Women's Super League Two action this Sunday at JobServe Community Stadium to face Ipswich Town, who are currently second in the table.
