The White House leadership shakeup arrived days after Democrats secured major gains in the midterm elections. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Susie Wiles, his longest-serving chief of staff, has resigned. Senior adviser Stephen Miller will assume the role immediately.

Miller has served as a central figure in the administration's immigration strategy. He helped drive the enforcement actions known as Operation Midway Blitz in the Chicago area. Trump said he wanted to make a change after Wiles did a great job. The president noted that Miller has been great and that sometimes in life you have to make moves.

Miller previously argued that his policy stance was necessary for national security. He asked who would say the cartels are gone and that America is for Americans and Americans only. His promotion places him at the center of the executive branch as the administration faces a new congressional dynamic.

Democratic leaders in Illinois reacted sharply to the news. Rep. Jonathan Jackson, who was just reelected to his third term representing the state's 1st District, called Miller a very dangerous man. Jackson said the appointment signals a combative stance toward the new Democratic majority in Congress.

Jackson described the move as tone deaf, arrogant, and cruel. He expects Miller to go full speed ahead with the remaining 730 days of the term to execute policy. Sen.-elect Juliana Stratton called Miller the architect of some of the most repugnant actions of the administration. She wrote that Trump is doubling down rather than changing course.

Miller posted on social media to acknowledge his new position. He stated that the mission is more clear than ever. He vowed to fight with all of their soul to support the president and defend the Republic.
