Subway has announced a plan to open up to 70 new restaurants inside Asda supermarkets over the next four years.

This expansion will increase the number of Subway franchises located within Asda stores by more than 50 percent. The move follows a successful period for Asda, which added 120 Subway stores to its retail portfolio during the past year.

The agreement is part of Subway’s broader strategy to grow its presence in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The company aims to double its footprint to 10,000 restaurants by 2031. This target includes markets in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

New locations will begin to open in January of next year. These restaurants will follow the company’s Blueprint design and operating model. In the last 18 months, Subway signed six new Master Franchise agreements across 14 countries in the EMEA region. These agreements cover areas in Central Europe, Azerbaijan, the Nordics, Iberia, and Qatar.

Tracy Gehlan, Subway’s EMEA President, stated that the expansion will bring freshly made products to more customers. "We’re building on a strong foundation across EMEA, with significant opportunities to grow in both existing and new markets," Gehlan said. She added that the ambition to double the footprint reflects confidence in the brand and its development partners.

Subway serves sandwiches, soups, salads, wraps, and protein bowls to millions of guests daily. The restaurants are owned and operated by thousands of franchisees around the world.
