Bristol City traveled to the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Saturday to face Bolton Wanderers in a league match. The Robins entered the game looking for their first win in five attempts. Michael Skubala's side had drawn their previous fixture, a 0-0 stalemate against Stoke City, on the prior Saturday. A victory at Bolton would end the recent winless streak. If the team failed to win, their next chance to break the run was scheduled for Wednesday evening against Wolves at Ashton Gate.
Steven Schumacher made eight changes to the Bolton Wanderers lineup. The home manager adjusted the starting eleven following a 5-1 loss to Middlesbrough the previous weekend. That defeat had followed positive results for Bolton against Wolves and Southampton. Schumacher praised Skubala in the matchday program, noting that the Bristol manager had done an outstanding job at Lincoln and would require Bolton to be at their best to secure a result.
Bristol City made one substitution from their last match. Brian De Keersmaecker came in for Gibson Yah, marking De Keersmaecker's second start for the club since his deadline day transfer. Lorent Tolaj returned to the starting lineup, providing a boost to the forward line. Tomi Horvat was included in the matchday squad, replacing Yah on the bench after missing the Stoke City game. Rob Dickie remained out of the matchday squad, having returned to training on Thursday after an injury sustained against Lincoln City.
Noah Eile was also ruled out for the match. The defender has been sidelined since the extended international break due to an illness. Skubala indicated that Eile is heading in the right direction but is not yet match-fit. The expected Bristol City formation was a 3-5-2 setup. Brad Collins was expected to lead a backline of George Tanner, Luke McNally, and Lisav Eissat. Rio Cardines and Cam Pring were listed as wing-backs, while Jason Knight, De Keersmaecker, and Joe Williams formed the midfield. Dom Ballard and Tolaj were projected to play up front.
The last meeting between these two sides took place in 2018, resulting in a 2-2 draw. In the reverse fixture that season, Matty Taylor and Kasey Palmer scored for Bristol City to secure a 2-1 win over Bolton in the FA Cup at Ashton Gate. Goals in that cup match were credited to Callum O'Dowda and Niclas Eliasson. The current match provided an opportunity for the traveling fans to see the team break its recent scoring drought, a topic Skubala discussed during the week's training sessions.
