Cliftonville scored seven goals against Carrick Rangers on Saturday at Solitude, a result that marks the club's largest margin of victory in the Irish Premiership since November 2014. The team had not managed such a heavy league defeat of an opponent since beating 10-man Ballymena United 7-0 more than 12 years ago. This emphatic win snapped a run of six consecutive league defeats, a stretch in which Cliftonville had managed just two goals.
Manager Jim Magilton acknowledged the shift in momentum after his side lost four straight matches earlier in the season. He noted that the team has now won its past three games in all competitions, scoring 12 goals in the process. The victory also ended a long home winless streak, as Cliftonville had not beaten a team at Solitude since 5 September when they defeated Portadown. Fans who had watched the team squander chances over the previous few months saw a different display on Saturday.
Striker Brian Healy scored twice in the match, adding to a recent surge of form. He has now netted four goals in his last two appearances. Magilton substituted Healy at the 60-minute mark to keep him fresh for upcoming fixtures. The manager said Radio Ulster's Sportsound that the team has a big game against Bangor in the ToalsBet Senior Shield on Tuesday. Magilton said he wants to keep the striker hungry for that match.
The goals came from multiple sources, breaking the pattern of the team's recent struggles. Liam McStravick scored the opening goal and was named man of the match for his pace and creativity. Captain Rory Hale scored again, marking his second goal in as many games. Ben Quinn added the fourth goal of the match, his fifth of the campaign, while substitute Rhyss Campbell scored his first goals of the season.
Magilton credited the squad's resilience during the difficult period. He said there was criticism from both outside and inside the club, but he maintained faith in the players. The manager stated that it takes time to rebuild and for players to settle at a club like Cliftonville. He noted that Healy has always had quality and it was about giving him confidence to perform, a confidence the striker is now repaying.
The win moved Cliftonville up to fifth place in the league table. The team faces a busy schedule in the coming weeks that will test this new form. They play Bangor in the Shield semi-final on Tuesday, followed by a home Irish Premiership match against defending champions Larne on Friday.
The variety in goalscorers addresses a key weakness from the previous six-game losing run. With multiple players finding the net, the team appears capable of threatening opponents in different ways. The performance at Solitude suggests the team has moved past the frustration of the earlier part of the season.
