Western Michigan defeated Bowling Green 23-10 on Saturday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to improve its record to 6-3. The Broncos held off the Falcons, who finished the day at 2-7, behind a strong defensive effort and consistent kicking from Dieter Kelly.
The game turned late in the first quarter when Cole Cabana ran 82 yards up the middle for a touchdown. The score tied the game and set the tone for the Broncos' second-half surge. In the fourth quarter, Kelly kicked three field goals of 32, 50, and 48 yards to add all the remaining points for Western Michigan.
Bowling Green had a chance to close the gap early. Travis Kenner kicked a 48-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to make it 16-10. However, Kenner missed a 32-yard attempt late in the third quarter, which helped maintain the Broncos' lead. Bowling Green had won the previous three matchups against Western Michigan.
The Broncos' defense locked down Bowling Green's offense in the final minutes. Justyce Betts, Amarian Louis, and Daeh McCullough each intercepted a pass during the Falcons' last three possessions. Jay Kastantin, the Bowling Green quarterback, threw for 149 yards and a touchdown but was picked off twice.
Cabana finished the game with 110 rushing yards on seven carries. Aveion Chenault contributed 109 receiving yards on five catches, while quarterback Broc Lowry threw for 146 yards. Lowry also connected with Ryan Brotherton for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter that gave Western Michigan the lead it would not relinquish.
Both teams return to action on November 10. Bowling Green will host Kent State at home, while Western Michigan travels to Akron for its next game.
