Five hundred million dollars. That is the estimated development cost for the upcoming video game Gears of War: E-Day, according to a reader letter published in the Games Inbox column on Tuesday, November 3. The figure sparked a heated debate among local gamers about whether high-budget franchises are still worth the investment in 2026.

The discussion centers on the imminent release of Grand Theft Auto 6, or GTA 6. Paulie, a resident writing to the Metro column, outlined a specific plan for the first hours of gameplay. He intends to skip the primary narrative entirely to focus on exploration. His target is the wilderness areas of the game map, specifically the Everglades and a location described as a mud tournament venue.

Paulie noted that he prefers the outdoor environments found in open-world games. He referenced leaked footage from a project called Cyberleek, which showed promising outdoor graphics. He believes the new GTA 6 title is designed to allow players to break free from structured missions. He observed that robberies in the new game appear to be optional activities rather than mandatory story beats, giving players more freedom.

Other readers in the same column expressed mixed feelings about current game development trends. Archie questioned why Sony Bend, the studio behind Days Gone, remained active while other studios like Bluepoint, Japan Studio, and London Studio were shut down. Archie suggested that Sony Bend’s next project might be a reboot of Syphon Filter, a franchise he believes has a small dedicated following.

Jono, a Nintendo Switch 2 owner since launch, discussed the current state of the console’s library. He admitted to initial regret over buying the device early due to a lack of major titles in its first year. However, he cited a subsequent price increase and an improved game lineup as reasons he no longer feels that regret. Jono is looking forward to the release of a new Metroid game at the start of the new year.

The column also featured a letter from Xane regarding the Gears of War: E-Day budget. Xane argued that the $500 million price tag is excessive for a franchise that has seen little gameplay innovation in over 20 years. He suggested that the developers could have reused the graphics engine from Gears 5, which he considered visually impressive. Xane criticized Microsoft for spending heavily on a tired franchise and warned that such spending often leads to mass layoffs later.

Mickah asked about the physical ocarina accessory for the upcoming Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. The reader wanted to know if the real, working ocarina would be available for purchase. The editors responded that no new information had been released, though they noted the electronic version had sold out quickly. Mickah planned to hum the tunes if the physical item remained unavailable.

Adam W. shared his experience with Final Fantasy Resonance. He said he purchased the game after trying the demo version. He completed the game in approximately 50 hours, including optional final bosses. He played on the Switch 2 and found the turn-based combat suitable for playing while watching other things. Adam is now waiting for reviews of the Zelda remake before deciding whether to buy it, citing concern that the 1998 gameplay style might feel dated to newcomers.

Alvin Rainflowers speculated that the next episode of South Park would be created using GTA 6 technology, similar to a previous World of Warcraft episode. He noted that the show has two episodes left in its current run. He hoped that Rockstar Games had provided the animation team with the necessary tools to pull off the stunt. The editors mentioned they might move their Inbox to a platform like Substack to improve moderation options for reader comments.

Simon noted that Nintendo added Pinball: Revenge of the ‘Gator to the Game Boy classics section on Nintendo Switch Online. He described the experience as nostalgic and fun. Logan expressed hope for a Star Wars Jedi 3 release next year to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Star Wars. He also speculated about an announcement for Battlefront 3, stating that Star Wars fans have had a strong year for games.
