Santa Monica Studio Moves God Of War Laufey Release to May 2027
The title shifts from a crowded February slot to a quieter May window, maintaining its position ahead of the end of physical PlayStation 5 production.

Santa Monica Studio, the developer based in California, has moved the launch date for God Of War Laufey to May 20, 2027. This decision shifts the title three months from its originally announced release of February 16, 2026. The change alters the scheduling for one of Sony’s major upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusives.
The studio announced the new timeline in a statement posted on X, citing a need to add final details to the game. The developers described the process as putting finishing touches on the project to ensure it reaches its full potential. No specific technical reasons were provided for the three-month extension.
The original February launch window was particularly dense for major video game releases. God Of War Laufey would have faced direct competition from Microsoft’s Fable, which was scheduled for release just one week later. The month also included remakes of the original Tomb Raider and Persona 4, creating a crowded market for consumer attention.
May 2027 offers a less congested release schedule. The only major title currently slated for the same day is the Switch 2 version of the Persona 4 remake. This spacing allows the God Of War title to stand out more clearly in the market during its launch month.
The delay impacts the broader 2027 release calendar for Sony. Until Dawn 2 is still scheduled to launch on January 28, 2027. This creates a larger gap between that release and God Of War Laufey compared to the previous one-month interval. Sony also plans to release Daba: Land Of Water Scar and a Kena: Bridge Of Spirits sequel next year, though neither has a confirmed date yet.
Other major titles are expected in 2027 as well. Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is believed to be targeting the year, although Sony has not officially confirmed a date. Sony Bend, the studio behind Days Gone, is also reportedly preparing to reveal a new project. These releases will share the 2027 window with the delayed God Of War title.
The game will still launch before Sony ends production of physical PlayStation 5 games, a process expected to conclude after 2027. Pre-orders for the title opened months before the new date was set. Fans responded to the news on social media, largely expressing support for the development team taking additional time to refine the game.
