Google announced on Monday that it is integrating new artificial intelligence capabilities into its core search and classroom platforms. The company stated that these changes will give school administrators greater control over how students interact with AI, but the move carries a specific condition for districts that choose to disable the technology entirely.

Under the initiative, which Google labels 'AI in the Learning Era 2026,' the company is introducing 'Guided Learning' features into Google Search and Google Classroom. Chris Phillips, the company's vice president and general manager of education, described the system as a digital coach. Rather than providing immediate final answers to complex questions, the AI will ask students step-by-step questions intended to support critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The policy grants K-12 administrators the authority to enable or disable AI products, including Gemini and Gemini Notebook, on managed student accounts. According to reporting, these tools will be turned off by default in early 2027. This means schools must explicitly choose to opt in to use the new features.

The primary point of contention for school boards is the integration of generative AI into the standard Google Search experience. Because the AI is now embedded in the search engine, districts that decide to completely block AI tools will lose access to Google Search. Phillips explained to The Times that students on restricted accounts will see a message from their school indicating that the search function is not available.

Google has not yet published a list of specific school districts that plan to enable the new features or those that may face the loss of search access. The company also did not detail how the policy will affect schools that rely heavily on Chromebooks and Google Workspace while wishing to restrict generative AI for reasons of academic integrity or data privacy.

The 'Guided Learning' tool is currently active in Google Classroom. The company plans to begin a pilot program for the AI coaching feature in Google Search at select U.S. Schools later this month. Google intends to expand the program to other districts in the coming months following the initial pilot phase.
