Bristol Rovers fell to a 3-1 defeat at Highbury Stadium on Saturday, a result that deepened the club's slump in League Two. The loss to Fleetwood Town left the Gas in 17th place, sitting four points behind the final play-off spot and four points above the relegation zone. It marks the team's seventh defeat in the last nine league matches, a run that has shifted the season from early optimism to concern.
Fleetwood Town took an early lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi in the 37th minute. Rhys Bennett extended the hosts' advantage before the break. Reiss Russell-Denny pulled one back for Bristol Rovers with a finish in the 84th minute. Josh Robertson secured the win for Fleetwood six minutes later, ending Rovers' brief surge for an equalizer.
Manager Steve Evans experimented with a 3-4-2-1 formation for the first time this season. Arvin Appiah and Shaq Forde played as the two number tens behind striker Fabrizio Cavegn. The narrow front line often faced long balls from Fleetwood, isolating the attackers against a physically dominant defense. Bristol Rovers trailed 1-0 at halftime, with Loupalo-Bi missing a clear chance before scoring his goal.
Evans switched to a 4-3-1-2 at the break, bringing on Joe Quigley for Forde. Quigley was not fully fit, which contributed to a lack of a focal point in the first half. Despite some improved physicality, Fleetwood maintained control. Rovers finished the match with only four shots and an expected goals figure of 0.20, compared to Fleetwood's 21 shots and 2.21 expected goals.
Individual performances raised questions, particularly for Richie Smallwood and Shaq Forde. Smallwood, 35, struggled to cover space in the midfield two alongside Clinton Mola in the first half. The addition of Keenan Gough to create a midfield three in the second half provided some help, though Smallwood was beaten for Fleetwood's third goal. Forde has made 14 league appearances this season without a goal, a performance level that contrasts with his strong spells under Evans last term.
The absence of key players compounded the tactical issues. Tommy Leigh and Kofi Balmer were suspended, while Bobby Kamwa and Ellis Harrison were injured. Riley Harbottle and Jack Aitchison remain out until December. Evans noted in a post-match interview that six or seven of the unavailable players would likely start for other teams.
"The Gasheads don't want to hear me tonight making excuses about injuries and suspensions, and that," Evans said. "But also, what I'd say to them is, get a little bit of paper, a piece of paper. And write them down. And how many of them would start for them? Without me getting emotional. How many of them would start for them? I suggest six or seven. So don't tell me this is a Steve Evans team, because it's not."
The club's transfer strategy in the summer is now under scrutiny. Rovers loaned out three strikers, leaving them with only three out-and-out center forwards. With Quigley unfit and Harrison ruled out, the team lacked a physical presence up front. Evans noted that the team returns to league action in two weeks, currently four points off the play-offs. He stated, "When people knock me and put me down, they see a reaction; we win games."
Bristol Rovers face a difficult schedule in November. After two cup games at The Memorial Stadium, they host Chesterfield on November 14. They will then travel to Cheltenham Town and finish the month against Tranmere Rovers. All three opponents currently sit in the top half of the table. Leigh, Balmer, and potentially Harrison and Kamwa are expected to return for the Chesterfield match.
The team is currently six points behind the automatic promotion places. If Rovers lose all three of their November league matches, they could drop into the bottom two of League Two. The return of suspended and injured players will be crucial as the club attempts to stabilize its position before the end of the month.
