Fleetwood Town will face Bristol Rovers in League Two this weekend, following a second round Carabao Cup victory over Premier League champions Arsenal. The Cod Army advanced to the quarter-finals after winning a penalty shootout 5-3 at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday evening. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, allowing the lower league side to progress against Mikel Arteta's team.
Fleetwood head coach Matt Lawlor stated that the squad is turning its attention to Saturday's fixture. He noted that the team had a planned day off on Wednesday before returning to training. Lawlor described the upcoming match as full steam ahead, aiming to convert the emotional high from Tuesday into a positive result at home.
The home record at Highbury Stadium remains a central factor in the team's strategy. Fleetwood have lost only one of their last 11 home matches in all competitions this season. Lawlor called the ground an absolute sanctuary, citing the team's difficulty in being beaten on their own turf. He indicated that six of the next eight scheduled games will be played at Highbury, a schedule he is currently verifying.
In the Carabao Cup, Fleetwood will next host Everton in mid-December. The draw was announced on Wednesday, following Everton's 3-1 victory over Newcastle United. Lawlor expressed delight at the home tie, viewing it as another chance for supporters to witness the club in a major competition. He emphasized his preference for playing under the lights at home, where the team has performed well.
Bristol Rovers arrive in good form, having beaten Swindon Town recently to secure a point. Lawlor described the Gas as a fantastically well-drilled team under manager Steve Evans. He pointed to Rovers' previous season, where they achieved 11 consecutive wins, including a run of home victories that carried into the current campaign. The Fleetwood manager noted that Rovers possess a squad of experienced and physically capable players.
Steve Evans, the Bristol Rovers manager, acknowledged his team's struggles on the road. Rovers have lost five of their first six away league matches this season. Evans stated in a press conference that he would accept a draw given the current losing sequence. He highlighted the physical nature of his side, noting their ability to compete for a large proportion of the game.
Fleetwood currently sits in 18th place in League Two with 14 points from 13 matches. The team has secured only three wins in the division this season. Bristol Rovers previously defeated Fleetwood 1-0 last season, a result that occurred shortly after Fleetwood eliminated Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. That goal was scored by Macauley Southam-Hales in the first half at Blundell Park.
