The Philadelphia 76ers improved their record to 6-1 after defeating the Charlotte Hornets 109-104 on Saturday. The team won without the help of star players LeBron James and Joel Embiid, who sat out the game for load management reasons. This victory followed a 98-93 win over the New York Knicks on Friday, a contest that also featured the absence of key starters due to injury and rest.
The wins highlighted the depth of the Sixers roster. Coach Nick Nurse turned to younger players when the usual scoring options were unavailable. Dean Wade started on Friday after Jaylen Brown missed time with a sore knee. Wade did not score a point or attempt a shot during his 26 minutes. He contributed three steals, two rebounds, and one assist. His defensive role was central to limiting Knicks star OG Anunoby to nine points.
Wade’s performance shifted on Saturday. With both James and Embiid resting, he recorded a career-high 10 assists and grabbed five rebounds. His passing helped the team complete a comeback win against the Hornets. James praised Wade’s intangibles, noting that Wade is always in the right place at the right time. James called him the perfect player for every team because he consistently makes winning plays.
Anfernee Simons provided a spark from the bench in both games. The guard, who was signed to a two-year contract worth $12.3 million, shot 13-for-23 from the field across the two contests. He made 10 of his 17 three-point attempts and scored 40 total points. Simons had missed most of training camp and the preseason with a hamstring injury but has found his rhythm recently. He became a reliable scoring threat off the bench, taking some pressure off the primary ball handlers.
VJ Edgecombe also made clutch contributions in both victories. On Friday, with 33 seconds left, Edgecombe hit a 27-foot three-pointer to give the Sixers a 94-90 lead. He received the pass after setting a screen for Tyrese Maxey, who drew double team pressure. On Saturday, Edgecombe hit a step-back three with 36 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 105-101. Nurse described Edgecombe as a playmaker in crunch time who does not shy away from big moments.
Maxey noted that playing with Simons allows him to focus less on personal scoring. Maxey said he looked for Simons in the second half of the Knicks game, running plays for him rather than forcing his own shots. This dynamic helps the team function smoothly even when star players are resting. The coaching staff has emphasized this jelling process since the start of training camp.
Nurse praised the intent and focus of the team from day one. He said the energy from the beginning of the season led to their current success. The team continues to manage minutes for Maxey, Edgecombe, and Brown to ensure they are fresh for later in the season. The recent wins demonstrate that the supporting cast can carry the load when the main stars are on the bench.
