Coron Russell Jr. has recorded 34 tackles through eight games for Roman Catholic High School. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore safety also has two fumble recoveries, one interception, one sack, and eight tackles for loss. He is ranked No. 4 among safeties nationally in the 2029 class by 247Sports.

Russell’s path to the starting lineup began in late May 2025. Cahillites head coach Rick Prete told the incoming freshman he would start at strong safety, a position Russell had not played since sixth grade. Prete said he wanted to share his plans with the family during a school visit. Russell had previously played defensive end and wide receiver in Winslow Township, N.J.

The transition required adjustment. Russell struggled with pass coverage and play reading early in the 2025 season. He learned to identify offensive line movements such as high hat and low hat signals. Roman Catholic won its first state championship that year, beating Bishop McDevitt 28-6 in the PIAA Class 5A final.

Russell’s confidence grew by the end of his freshman year. He made a key fourth-and-one stop against St. Joe’s Prep late in the 2025 season. Last Saturday, Roman Catholic defeated St. Joe’s Prep 21-17 at Penn’s Franklin Field. It was the first regular season Catholic League victory over the Hawks since 1999.

The Cahillites are 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the Catholic League. They moved up to Class 6A this season. The team plays Father Judge in the PCL Class 6A semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday at Springfield Township High School. St. Joe’s Prep, the No. 2 seed, faces La Salle in the other semifinal on Sunday.

Russell holds scholarship offers from 25 schools. He carries a 3.7 GPA and runs track, including the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Walter Hudson, a Roman Catholic linebacker, said Russell gained confidence by playing through early mistakes. Hudson noted that Russell now reacts instinctively rather than overthinking plays.

Prete said Russell’s size and speed make him a candidate for outside linebacker or edge rusher in the future. For now, Russell plays a hybrid role. He covered St. Joe’s Prep receiver Jett Harrison multiple times last Saturday. Harrison finished with five catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns, but only two catches for 22 yards in the second half.

Russell said he prioritizes returning to the state championship. He views his current role as temporary while he continues to develop. He stated he is willing to play any position the coaches require.
