Activision has released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

The game arrives on consoles and PCs this week. It marks the next installment in the long-running franchise.

The release follows a difficult year for the series. Last year's Black Ops 7 received mixed reviews. Its campaign was widely criticized. Activision apologized to fans and promised improvements. This new title aims to address those concerns.

The single-player campaign is a major focus for this entry. It follows Captain John Price, a character central to the Modern Warfare sub-franchise. Price has gone rogue after events in the previous game. He forms an alliance with a Mexican cartel. His goal is to hunt down a target known as The Archer. The Archer is manipulating events to facilitate a Russian occupation of the Middle East.

The story also features Park Hyun Jun. He is a rookie soldier involved in a conflict between North and South Korea. The campaign alternates between these two protagonists. It consists of 16 missions. The settings include a Korean supermarket, a New York nightclub, and a Paris street. The narrative concludes the current arc of the Modern Warfare storyline.

Mads Mikkelsen voices The Archer. Prisca Kim plays the Korean commander Ri Ju-Young. The campaign features a fast pace. It includes a mission where players control the newly appointed Supreme Leader of North Korea. That level involves escaping a palace invasion. Another mission offers an open-world style layout with optional exploration. Players can choose to fast travel to objectives if they prefer a faster experience.

The DMZ mode has been expanded. This extraction shooter component was introduced in previous titles. In Modern Warfare 4, it takes place on a large map called Hajin. The map includes forests, towns, nuclear reactors, and prisons. Players can complete preset goals or dynamic operations. These operations appear randomly while roaming the battlefield. The mode includes six story missions at launch. One mission involves stealing cash from a casino vault. The mode works best for players who join in squads of three.

The multiplayer component retains core modes like Team Deathmatch and Domination. The map lineup has received some criticism. Maps like Transit 213 and Silkworm feature tight layouts. Some players report erratic spawn placements. Other maps, such as Rooftops and Lotus, are considered stronger. The gunplay has been adjusted. It removes the omnimovement seen in Black Ops 7. It focuses on traditional traversal like dashing, sliding, and vaulting. This change aims to return the series to its gunplay roots.

A new mode called Hijack is included. In this mode, teams compete to plant a data spike at the enemy base. Players can pass the spike to teammates. Another mode, Collateralm, features round-based bomb planting. A third mode, Inflation, rewards players for accumulating cash from kills. These additions offer variety to the standard multiplayer experience.

The game is available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Early sales figures have not yet been released. Local game stores in Bucks County have reported increased foot traffic since the release date. Players can engage in the campaign, DMZ, and multiplayer modes immediately. The title serves as a conclusion to the current Modern Warfare narrative arc.
