Paris Hilton is defending her family's Halloween costumes after online critics questioned why her toddler daughter dressed as a teacup while Hilton dressed as a princess.
The 45-year-old socialite shared a photo of her family in coordinated Beauty and the Beast outfits on Wednesday. Hilton wore a yellow ballgown as Belle. Her husband, Carter Reum, dressed as the Beast in a blue suit and furry mask. Their three-year-old son, Phoenix, wore a candelabra costume as Lumiere. Their two-year-old daughter, London, appeared as Chip, the chipped teacup.
Critics on Instagram argued that Hilton was stealing the spotlight from her children. One commenter called the choice narcissistic. Another asked when the kids would get to be the main characters. A third suggested the adults should have taken on supporting roles instead so the children could be the stars of the holiday.
Hilton responded to the feedback by explaining the selection process. She said Beauty and the Beast is one of the children's favorite movies. "London said she wanted to dress up as Chip," Hilton wrote. "She said it was her favorite character in the movie."
Many followers supported Hilton's explanation. One user noted that Hilton does a Halloween photoshoot every year and asked why people were upset. Another follower said the family's rendition was the only one they needed for the holiday.
The controversy centers on the visual hierarchy of the family portrait. Hilton's yellow ballgown and central position drew attention, while London's smaller teacup costume positioned her as a supporting element in the scene. Hilton's response highlighted that the costume choice originated from her daughter rather than the parent.
