Sue Devaney will leave her role as Debbie Webster on Coronation Street in August, following a storyline that has centered on the character's battle with dementia. The actress disclosed the timeline in an interview with Inside Soap, noting that the decision to step away is part of a planned narrative arc.

The character's departure from the Weatherfield setting will be marked by a specific milestone: her final Christmas. Jonathan Howard, who plays Debbie's son Carl, said that the production team has already received scripts for the holiday storyline. He stated that Carl will turn 40 just before Christmas, creating a sense that the festive period may be the last time Debbie is fully herself.

Debbie Webster's time at the Chariot Square hotel is coming to an end as her symptoms worsen. Next week on the soap opera, the character will formally sign the business over to her husband, Ronnie Bailey, played by Vinta Morgan. This move ends her tenure as the hotel's manager, a position she held for years despite increasing difficulty in managing the workload.

The transition at the hotel will see Ryan Connor, played by Ryan Prescott, continue to support Ronnie in the capacity he previously held for Debbie. Devaney explained that the character is making this decision because the daily demands of running the establishment have become unmanageable. She noted that while others have advised Debbie to stop, the character waited until she felt ready to act.

Devaney pointed to recent plot points as catalysts for Debbie's decision. These include a brief detention following a car pile-up that Debbie did not cause, and an incident where Adam Barlow's ring went missing while she held the keys. The actress described these moments as pivotal in Debbie realizing she could no longer maintain the level of control required for the job.

The visual representation of the character will change alongside her role. Devaney said there will be a distinct shift in Debbie's wardrobe and appearance because she will no longer be working in the hotel environment. The actress indicated that viewers will see Debbie with less makeup in upcoming episodes, reflecting the physical limitations of her condition.

Howard emphasized the emotional weight of the storyline for the cast and crew. He described the experience of working with Devaney as deeply personal, noting that she has been a supportive figure since he joined the cast. He acknowledged that while the end is still a year away, the progression of the dementia plot makes the upcoming Christmas episodes particularly poignant.

The storyline has been written to avoid excessive sensationalism, focusing instead on the practical and emotional realities of the disease. Devaney stated that she infused the character with her own maternal traits and unique phrasing, aiming to create a specific Northern persona. She expressed delight at learning that viewers had come to love the character's specific voice and mannerisms.

The departure follows a pattern of long-running characters leaving the show after extended storylines. Debbie Webster has become a central figure in the Weatherfield community, serving as a matriarch to multiple families. The transition of the hotel to Ronnie Bailey marks a new chapter for the business, with Ryan Connor remaining as a key operational figure.

The production team is ramping up the intensity of the dementia storyline as the character approaches her exit. Howard described the upcoming episodes as very sad, citing the close bond between his character and Debbie. The final scripts for the Christmas period confirm that the narrative will focus on the character's final moments of clarity and family connection.
