Three Scottish Premiership matches on Wednesday night each carry a specific history for the managers involved.

Rangers travel to Tynecastle to face Hearts, and the match marks Derek McInnes's first return to the ground where he worked as Hearts manager until this summer. He left after leading the team to within minutes of the title in May. Striker Lawrence Shankland moved to Rangers first, and midfielder Cammy Devlin followed him. Shankland and Devlin are injured and will not play Wednesday. Hearts sit four points behind Rangers in the table. McInnes has said he expects a cold reception from the home crowd. "Well, the hope would be you get on to the pitch and clap the fans and there's an acknowledgement both ways," McInnes said. "But that's not going to happen. I totally understand it, though."

Dundee United go to Celtic Park on a five-match unbeaten run after beating Aberdeen 3-2 at Tannadice in heavy weather, a result that lifted the club to fourth place. Manager Jim Goodwin has changed the team's style this season, drawing on what he saw from Jens Berthel Askou at Motherwell last year. Goodwin has beaten Celtic in two of his last three meetings with the club, and both wins came at Tannadice last season. Celtic have not lost at home to Dundee United in 51 matches across all competitions since a 1-0 league defeat in December 1992.

Hibernian travel to Paisley to face St Mirren with three straight losses behind them and the team sitting at the bottom of the table after Sunday's narrow defeat by Celtic. Manager Marink Reedijk took charge recently and has used Grant Hanley, a centre-back, as a striker, a switch he said will not be repeated. St Mirren ended their own five-game losing streak with a win over Dundee on Saturday. Hibernian have lost only twice in their last 14 Premiership visits to St Mirren. "The positivity in the club is really good," Reedijk said ahead of Wednesday's match. "The second thing is we have also shown there is progress."

Celtic defeated Hearts at Parkhead ten days ago. McInnes managed Hearts for one season before leaving for Rangers in the summer. The three Wednesday matches kick off under lights at Tynecastle, Celtic Park and St Mirren's ground in Paisley.
