Saquon Barkley finished with 62 rushing yards and a touchdown on just nine offensive snaps in the Philadelphia Eagles' 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. The running back returned to the lineup after missing the previous two weeks with a hamstring injury. He touched the ball on every play he participated in, recording seven carries and two receptions for a total of 71 yards.
Barkley described his hamstring as feeling "great" after the game. He indicated that a back issue, which emerged during a 29-yard run in the first quarter, would likely not keep him out for future games. He deferred to the training staff for the final decision on his availability.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni noted that the team monitored Barkley closely due to the injury concerns. Sirianni stated that the medical staff and trainers confirmed the player was ready to play. The coach described Barkley as tough and eager to stay on the field for his teammates, noting that they had to slow him down to manage the workload.
The running back spent time in the medical tent and stretched with trainers on the sideline during the contest. Immediately after scoring on an 8-yard run on the first offensive possession, Barkley moved to an exercise bike on the sideline. His back pain worsened as the game progressed, leading to his final snap in the third quarter.
Barkley is the first NFL starter in the past 20 seasons to play at least nine offensive snaps and receive a touch on all of them. He expressed his desire to push his body to the limit despite the discomfort. He said it was difficult to be the best leader he could be while his body did not respond as he wanted.
The Eagles entered the game with significant injuries at the running back position. Will Shipley, Tank Bigsby, and Carson Steele remain on injured reserve with foot, abdomen, and shoulder issues, respectively. Dameon Pierce exited the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury, leaving Elijah Mitchell, who was promoted from the practice squad, to handle remaining rushing duties.
