An art installation featuring wartime silhouettes has been unveiled in Grantham to mark the town's Remembrance commemorations. The display is located outside the Guildhall Arts Centre and includes four wooden figures representing military personnel from World War I and World War II.
The wooden figures depict a World War I Tommy, a World War II paratrooper, a Land Girl, and a member of the Women's Royal Naval Service. Grantham Arts organized workshops where college students researched local military history. The students then painted the four distinctive figures. The Wren silhouette carries the name of Grantham woman Joan Briggs, who served in the Navy during World War II.
A cascading display of poppies accompanies the figures as a tribute to those who served. This poppy display is made of hundreds of handmade poppies stitched onto military camouflage netting. The installation first appeared in 2023.
A military march will take place in the town on November 8. This event follows a Remembrance Sunday service at St Wulfram's Church. In the wider county, thousands of poppies were released from beneath the wings of the Avro Lancaster Just Jane at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre to begin the county's poppy appeal. A service of remembrance is also scheduled for November 8 at the International Bomber Command Centre near Lincoln.
