Sunderland supporters are facing a difficult start to the Premier League season, with many pointing to the club’s return to European competition as a source of fatigue. The Black Cats have not played in Europe since 1973, but their current schedule includes at least eight Europa League matches. This added workload has coincided with a sluggish domestic record.

The team’s struggles became apparent after a 3-1 loss to Coventry City on Saturday. Captain Granit Xhaka questioned the squad's courage following the defeat. These comments came weeks after defender Nordi Mukiele described the side as arrogant. BBC Sport reports that manager Le Bris is not in immediate danger and will be given more time to improve results.

Statistical data from last season suggests maintaining high standards would be challenging. Sunderland had a lower expected goals difference than only Burnley and Wolves during their promotion campaign. This season, the numbers reflect a team struggling to create and convert chances. Two of the club's seven league goals have come from penalties.

Defensive issues have also plagued the team. Sunderland finished with 10 men in three of their recent losses. Reinildo Mandava was sent off against Arsenal, Kevin Danso against Bournemouth, and Omar Alderete against Coventry. Additionally, the team has failed to score a first-half goal in seven of their nine league games.

Transfer spending has decreased significantly compared to last summer. Sunderland spent 161 million pounds on 15 players after winning promotion in 2025. This summer, the club invested only 60 million pounds in five new players. The reduced outlay may contribute to the current difficulties in handling a congested fixture list.

The contrast between European and domestic performance is stark. Sunderland won two and drew one of their first three Europa League matches. In the Premier League, they have lost two and drawn one of the three games played immediately after European fixtures. The next test comes on Sunday against Chelsea, following a match against Dinamo Zagreb on Bonfire Night.
