In Washington, D.C., and Atlanta, Georgia, betting markets have shifted to place Senator Jon Ossoff as the leading candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. This change in odds follows a recent election where Democrats secured a historic victory, a result that has energized the party's base. Bookmakers William Hill and Star Sports now list Ossoff as the top contender, ahead of other prominent figures in the party.

The primary reason for this shift is Ossoff's recent performance in the Georgia Senate race. He widened his lead in the latest vote by nearly 20 percentage points. This result stands in sharp contrast to his initial victory in 2020, where he defeated Republican incumbent David Perdue by a narrow margin of 50.6% to 49.4%. That 2020 win made him the youngest incumbent U.S. senator at the time, at age 33.

Ossoff has built a reputation for effective public speaking and high approval ratings in his state. He is also known for a specific moment in August when he referenced a White House aide in a speech. He mentioned that the president wants to build a ballroom and travel with an aide named Natalie. This remark, which did not include the aide's surname, generated widespread media attention and reaction from political supporters.

Despite his rising profile, Ossoff has recently stated he has no plans to run for the White House. During a debate last month, he told voters, “I have zero interest in running for president. I’m not running for president. I’m running for re-election to the Senate.” This statement mirrors a pattern seen in past political cycles, where senators initially deny presidential ambitions before entering the race.

His current standing places him ahead of fellow Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gavin Newsom in the betting markets. He also holds equal or better odds than the leading Republican candidate, Vice President J.D. Vance. Vance’s position may be affected by his close association with President Donald Trump, whose recent defeat has been described as having historic proportions.

Ossoff’s background includes work as a political staffer and documentary producer before entering office. He was born in 1987 to an Australian mother and American father. His success in Georgia, a state that has historically voted Republican, has contributed to a wave of optimism for the Democratic Party following the election of Joe Biden in 2020.
