The acquisition aims to merge logistics capabilities with grocery technology to challenge Amazon.

DoorDash has proposed a $17 billion acquisition of Instacart, a move that would consolidate a major portion of the grocery delivery market in the United States and abroad. The companies stated the deal would combine DoorDash’s global reach and logistics expertise with Instacart’s technology infrastructure and established relationships with grocery chains.
The proposed merger is designed to help both companies better compete against rivals such as Amazon. By unifying their operations, the combined entity would control a larger share of the delivery sector. However, the consolidation could reduce competition in the space, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers and fewer negotiating partners for grocery retailers.
Randall Sargent, a partner at the consulting firm Oliver Wyman who specializes in grocery and retail, noted that the two companies had been competing for a share of consumers' wallets. He described the strategic shift from direct competition to a single corporate entity as a response to market pressures.
