Polls opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday in Pennsylvania for the general election. Residents across the state are voting in races for governor and two congressional districts. Voting continues until 8 p.m.

The gubernatorial contest pits Democratic incumbent Josh Shapiro against Republican challenger Stacy Garrity. Both candidates have spent the final week of the campaign soliciting votes from residents in counties across the Commonwealth. The race is one of the most competitive in the state this year.

In the 7th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Ryan Mackenzie faces Democratic challenger Bob Brooks. The district covers parts of the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas. In the 1st Congressional District, Republican incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick runs against Democratic challenger Bob Harvie. These two seats represent key targets for both parties in the national midterms.

Pennsylvania voters will also choose candidates for state legislature and local offices. The state’s election board reported standard lines at most polling locations. Early voting and mail ballots were counted before Tuesday, but in-person voting determines the final tally for same-day reporting.

The national context adds pressure to local races. President Donald Trump held rallies in several red states over the weekend. He told supporters in Salina, Kansas, to pretend he is on the ballot. His approval rating stands at 35 percent, according to recent polling. Many voters cite high prices and economic concerns as primary motivators.

Democrats hope to gain control of the House of Representatives. They need a net gain of three seats to take the majority. Republicans aim to hold their Senate majority, which currently stands at 53-47. The outcome in Pennsylvania could influence the balance of power in both chambers.

Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters expressed optimism on Monday. He said the party can defy history if voter turnout is high. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene argued that voters are angry and ready for change. She stated that the results should send a clear message about the presidential agenda.

Results will begin appearing late Tuesday night. The state Department of Election Services will certify final results in the coming days. Voters in Bucks County and surrounding areas can check official results through local election offices.
