Violence erupted across France and parts of Western Europe this week, marking the third consecutive weekend of unrest. The turmoil began in Paris, where a police officer was set alight by a Molotov cocktail thrown by protesters.

The incident occurred between the Porte de Bagnolet and Port de Charenton Metro stations. Video footage shows gendarmes in black riot gear holding shields as a fireball engulfed the officer at his feet. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez labeled the attack an attempted murder during a press conference yesterday evening.

The injured officer, who spoke anonymously to French news outlet RTL, described the physical sensation of the fire. He said the burning feeling was immediate and intense, intensifying over time because the fire was long-lasting and difficult to stop. He noted that the equipment began to be affected before he felt his flesh start to sting.

The officer stated that the flammable substance was greasy, causing him to watch it spread across his skin while wondering when it would end. He reported that he did not suffer serious injuries that would prevent him from returning to work.

The protests originated with school students demanding better classroom conditions. These demands quickly expanded into broader anger over the rising cost of living in France. The unrest has since spread to Italy, Belgium, and Albania.

In Germany, peaceful demonstrations by the youth group Gen Z Regelt turned violent in several cities last night. In Frankfurt, police closed the main shopping street after clashes with protesters. The state police for Hesse, known as Polizei Hessen, issued an appeal for photos and videos of the violence, citing property damage, thefts, and serious physical attacks on officers.

Boris Rhein, the state premier of Hesse, said the attackers in Frankfurt placed themselves outside society. He stated that officials would carefully assess the aggressors and draw conclusions. In Cologne, police cancelled the Gen Z Regelt march after seeing masks and fireworks, allowing the event to continue only as a stationary rally.
