Derek Barker, a 92-year-old former teacher at Monkton Combe School in Bath, stands accused of sexual offenses committed against four boys during his tenure in the 1970s and 1980s. The case is currently before Bristol Crown Court, where prosecutors allege that Barker abused his position of trust to exploit students at the boarding school.

Prosecutor Ellen McAnaw told the jury that Barker was a sexual predator who targeted young boys. She stated that his employment at the school was ideal for his interests because it placed him in constant contact with pupils. McAnaw argued that Barker exploited the trust placed in him by parents and the school administration to commit the alleged acts.

The court heard details of one incident where a pupil was summoned to Barker’s flat in the school grounds. According to the complainant, an older student sexually abused him while Barker sat in a chair masturbating. The complainant described the scene as a private sex show and said he was terrified because a teacher was present. After the incident, Barker reportedly told the older boy that the victim was one of the pretty boys, then sent the victim to his lessons.

The first complainant reported the abuse to police in 2022. He told officers that he had previously confided in the school chaplain, who initially appeared concerned. However, when the boy explained what had happened, the chaplain told him it was a wicked lie and that God would punish him one day. The complainant described this interaction as the biggest mistake of his life because the chaplain’s reaction ensured his silence for many years.

Barker’s departure from the school in the 1980s was prompted by a separate incident. He had asked a pupil to tie him to a bed in his home in Limpley Stoke while he wore only his underpants. The pupil took a photograph and developed it at the school’s photographic lab. Another teacher retrieved the photo and negatives, leading to Barker’s resignation, which he attributed to ill health. The prosecution contends the resignation was forced due to the compromising position he was found in.

Three other complainants came forward after Barker was charged for the first offense. One described the school environment as unsafe, with teachers ignoring bullying and violence. Another referred to a group of preferred students as Barker’s Boys. Barker denies three charges of buggery, three charges of indecency with a child, and two charges of indecent assault. The trial is ongoing.
