Chris Mann will serve as the next Kansas Attorney General after winning Tuesday's general election. The Democrat defeated incumbent Kris Kobach by capturing 51.9% of the vote. More than 13,500 ballots were cast in the race.
Kobach has held the office since January 2023. Both candidates advanced to the general election without facing primary opponents. In August, Kobach received 276,314 votes in the Republican primary. Mann earned just under 200,000 votes in the Democratic primary.
Mann is a former police officer and prosecutor. His campaign focused on defending the Constitution and protecting the rule of law. He also emphasized holding politicians and corporations accountable. Both candidates cited online threats to children, scams, and fraud as major concerns for Kansas families.
Kobach is a Topeka native who graduated from Washburn Rural High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard, a Ph.D. from Oxford University, and a law degree from Yale. In October 2026, Kobach filed lawsuits against OpenAI, arguing the company deceives parents. In July, he joined a nationwide effort to combat scam robocalls.
Mann's victory makes him the sixth Democrat to hold the position. He will officially assume the role in January. Mann is scheduled to be sworn into office on Jan. 11, 2027.
