Manchester United defeated Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford on Tuesday, ending a period of heavy losses in the Champions League with a late surge. The result offers a brief respite for a team that had fallen to 17th place in the Premier League, sitting two points above the bottom team. The win was secured by two late goals from Matheus Cunha, who also won the penalty that started the comeback.
The victory followed a chaotic first half in which Roma took a 2-0 lead. Matias Soule scored for Roma in the 11th minute after finding space created by Diogo Dalot. Five minutes later, Roma earned a penalty after Ayden Heaven blocked a shot with his arm. Donyell Malen converted the spot kick to extend the lead. Dalot was also out of position during the build-up to that penalty.
Jamie O'Hara, a pundit on talkSPORT, offered a blunt assessment of the performance. He described the first half as pathetic and called Dalot's display atrocious. O'Hara said he wanted to see the Portuguese defender substituted during the first 45 minutes because the defending was so poor. He noted that the team had stopped running and appeared to have given up before the break. O'Hara praised the second half, saying the players put in a big performance to turn the game around.
Manager Michael Carrick told Amazon Prime that the team grew into the match after conceding early goals. He credited the players for making the most of every opportunity. Carrick said the win was important for the club and allowed the fans to go home happy. He emphasized that the team must use the momentum from this match to prepare for their next league fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Bruno Fernandes, the team captain, said the victory was not about saving the manager's job. He stated that the club and the players needed the win more than anything. Fernandes said the team had been working hard to escape a difficult situation. He expressed belief in the manager, the staff, and every player in the squad. Fernandes added that his aim remains to win every game ahead.
United faces Aston Villa at home on Sunday. Villa currently sits 10th in the Premier League. The Villa side lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the Champions League earlier this week. United's previous result left them just above the relegation zone in the domestic table.
