Bill Hader will voice the title character in a new animated film based on Dr. Seuss's 1957 children's book, The Cat in the Hat. The production expands the original narrative into a larger adventure that takes the character into new settings.
The story follows the cat as he enters the home of a single mother and her two children. This intrusion leads the group into a separate world characterized by energy and danger. Director Alessandro Carloni stated that the filmmakers used the original book as the opening sequence for the film.
Carloni explained that the creative team decided to use the book as the first three minutes of the movie. The subsequent plot explores the cat's motivations. The director noted that engaging with children on a rainy day is actually the cat's job.
Hader described the project as funny and moving. He said the film is honest and offers something for audiences to connect with. The voice cast also includes America Ferrera and Quinta Brunson.
Ferrera said she was surprised by how the animation changes depending on the world the characters inhabit. She noted that elements from the actual book are brought into the film. Brunson said she was attracted to the project because it offers a different spin on the classic story.
The film includes humor aimed at adults alongside the children's content. It also features a Taylor Swift song performed by the USC marching band. Hader joked about the potential perks of this inclusion.
Hader said he would like a nice table at a restaurant by the window. He referenced his role in a movie where a Taylor Swift song was played by the USC marching band. He noted that he was a cat in a balloon in that previous production.
