Ruby Jeans is opening a second venue on Chandos Road in Redland, Bristol. The new location will operate as a bakery and cafe during the day and transition into an Indian restaurant in the evening. The business previously opened a single location in Shirehampton in 2019.
The new site occupies the former Royal Spice curry house. That establishment closed in April 2025. Chandos Road is known for its concentration of independent food businesses. It is home to Michelin-starred restaurant Wilsons, along with Dongnae, Little Hollows Pasta, and One Fish Street.
Mark Pummell, who directs Ruby Jeans, said the new opening combines his daytime cafe concept with an evening dining model. He will work with Liv Garriock, the head chef, and Tahir Bhuiyan, a business partner who owns the Shirehampton restaurant Ali Mahal. The menu for the evening service will include curries developed by the team.
Pummell explained that Ruby Jeans started as a small coffee shop in Shirehampton. He said the goal was to create a space that combined good food with a personal welcome. The business adapted during the pandemic to offer takeaway food and groceries, which helped build relationships with the local community.
The daytime menu at the new Chandos Road location will include brunch items, sandwiches, paninis, cakes, and coffee. Pummell described the desired atmosphere as relaxed, allowing customers to meet friends or grab a quick lunch. The evening offering will launch after the daytime operations are established. This phase will introduce the Indian-Bangladeshi concept in collaboration with Bhuiyan.
Pummell cited the specific character of Chandos Road as a reason for choosing the location. He noted the presence of independent businesses and a mix of residents, students, and local workers. He said the team wants to provide a place these groups can use regularly.
The hospitality industry is currently facing rising costs and cautious customer spending. Pummell said the business has had to make difficult decisions regarding menus, staffing, and operations. He stated that the new location is an opportunity to apply lessons learned from the Shirehampton site.
The focus for the next period is establishing the Chandos Road venue and learning customer preferences. The team plans to develop both the daytime and evening offerings over time. Pummell said the priority is building a sustainable business that supports the team and becomes part of the Redland neighborhood. Ruby Jeans already hosts a curry club with Ali Mahal on the second Friday of every month at its Shirehampton site.
