Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Karen Bass in the mayoral election for Los Angeles.

Bass, the city's first Black female mayor, conceded the race on Thursday via a social media post. She described the result as not what the team had hoped for but stated that the people of Los Angeles had spoken. Bass said she would continue to ensure the promise of a better life belongs to all residents.

Raman, a member of the Los Angeles City Council and an Indian immigrant, had entered the race as a long shot. She defeated reality star Spencer Pratt in the primary earlier in the year. The campaign centered on cutting homelessness, increasing housing stock, and saving Hollywood jobs. Raman also pledged to protect residents from immigration enforcement, fix roads, and revive the city's nightlife.

The 2025 Los Angeles fires were the central issue of the election. The disasters killed dozens of people and razed neighborhoods. Bass faced political backlash for her absence during the emergency and the city's response to the disaster. Her background as a community organizer during the 1992 Rodney King riots had previously defined her political identity in Los Angeles.

Bass served in the United States Congress before becoming mayor. She had never lost a race for political office prior to this election. Raman's victory aligns with a wider pattern of Democratic wins in the United States. Washington, D.C., also elected Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist, as its new mayor.

President Donald Trump commented on the results at the White House. He stated that history suggests the wins by left-flank politicians would be a disaster. Raman and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are both democratic socialists who ran on progressive platforms.

The incoming mayor will oversee the hosting of the Super Bowl in 2027 and the 2028 Summer Olympics. Raman's platform emphasized fixing what she called the broken status quo.
