Fleetwood Town secured a place in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday by defeating Arsenal in a penalty shootout. The victory occurred at Highbury in Fleetwood, Lancashire, and marked a rare triumph for the League Two club over the reigning Premier League champions.

The match began with Aaron Loupalo-Bi scoring for Fleetwood in the 21st minute. Viktor Gyokeres equalized for Arsenal after the break. The teams remained level through regulation time, forcing the contest into extra time and eventually penalties. Max Dowman of Arsenal was sent off after kicking out following a challenge by Harrison Neal.

Conor Haughey scored the decisive penalty for Fleetwood, but goalkeeper Jay Lynch was instrumental in the shootout. Lynch saved penalties from Ben White, Martin Odegaard, and Bruno Guimaraes. The wind at the coastal venue was a factor in the conditions, a detail Lynch noted after the match.

Manager Matt Lawlor described the night as the biggest in the club's history regarding the opposition involved. Lawlor stated that he was glad his players brought their current form to the game, making the town and club proud. He acknowledged the difficulty of preparing for such a high-profile fixture while managing a team in 18th place in League Two.

Left-back Jake Batty said the team felt a different energy during cup competitions compared to league play. Batty noted that their league form had been inconsistent, with only one win in their last eight games. He suggested that the atmosphere in the town could provide momentum for upcoming league matches.

Fans flooded the pitch after the final kick. One fan, Ben, who has supported the club for 15 years, described the moment as the best of his life. He mentioned receiving hundreds of messages on his phone and feeling a surge of happiness for the small club. He contrasted this victory with recent league defeats at Cheltenham and Exeter.

Fleetwood Town will return to league action on Saturday against Bristol Rovers. Lawlor told his players to enjoy the victory before focusing on that match. The club is currently in 18th place in League Two and is looking to carry the confidence from the cup win into their regular season schedule.

The draw for the quarterfinals has not yet been announced. Batty expressed a hope for a home tie against another opponent. The team is aiming to be fearless in their next cup match, building on the momentum from the recent upset at Highbury.
