Football’s most prestigious individual award will be presented at the London Palladium within 24 hours. The race has narrowed to three candidates: Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane. Each player has a distinct claim to the trophy, but the metrics used to evaluate them point in different directions.

Bookmakers place Kane as the overwhelming favorite, assigning him a 70 percent probability of winning. This assessment relies heavily on his statistical output. Kane scored 73 goals in the 2025-26 season, the highest total by any player since Lionel Messi’s record of 82 in 2011-12. His consistency in front of goal has made him the clear choice for traditional betting markets.

Data models tell a more nuanced story. Avisia, a French artificial intelligence firm, rates Yamal as the leading contender with a 23 percent chance. Kane follows at 21 percent, while Mbappe sits at 19 percent. Rodri, the 2024 winner, is also at 19 percent, and Messi holds an 18 percent chance of a record-extending ninth award. Avisia noted that its model correctly predicted the top five finishers for the 2025 award won by Ousmane Dembele.

The discrepancy between the two forecasting methods highlights the weight placed on different types of achievements. Mbappe’s case is built on individual brilliance. He was La Liga’s top scorer with 25 goals and the Champions League’s leading marksman with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot, setting a record with 12 tournament goals. However, he finished the season without a major team trophy.

Kane’s claim is strengthened by team success. He won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, though England only reached the World Cup final. Yamal’s profile is different. He won both the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Injury limited his personal statistics this season, but his team success aligns with historical patterns. Only four of the previous 19 winners did not secure the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America in the year of their honor.

Peers have weighed in on the decision. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and former Italy international Marco Materazzi both backed Messi, citing his performance at age 38. Jude Bellingham supported Kane, praising his work ethic, while Anthony Gordon favored Yamal. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni endorsed Mbappe, describing his season as incredible.

Yamal, 19, would become the youngest winner in the award’s history if he takes the prize. The current record is held by Brazil’s Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.

The winner will be announced at the London Palladium ceremony.
