Jay-Z will take the Super Bowl halftime stage on Feb. 14 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Monday night. The announcement ended days of speculation about who would perform.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he told Roc Nation, when the league first reached an agreement with the company, that he wanted Jay-Z to perform "whenever the moment felt right to him." Roc Nation has advised the league on entertainment presentations, including the halftime show, since 2019. Jay-Z said at the time that he told Goodell, "If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now."
Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, said in a statement that the show marks 30 years of his work. "From 'Reasonable Doubt' to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage, this has been a journey," he said. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true."
His return to SoFi Stadium follows a run of concerts celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Reasonable Doubt," his 1996 debut album. Those shows included three sold-out performances at Yankee Stadium and dates in London and Paris before a stop at SoFi Stadium over the weekend. At SoFi, his daughter Blue Ivy played piano during "The Story of O.J." and "Dead Presidents." Scarface, John Legend and DJ Khaled appeared on opening night, and Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Too $hort joined Saturday's finale. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Eminem and Nas appeared earlier in the run at Yankee Stadium.
Jay-Z has won 25 Grammy Awards and received 89 nominations, second to his wife, Beyoncé, who has performed at two Super Bowls. "Reasonable Doubt" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year. He co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records and founded Roc Nation in 2008. He became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
Roc Nation will executive produce the Feb. 14 halftime show, with Hamish Hamilton directing. Bad Bunny's performance in February won seven Emmys, a record for the category, and Kendrick Lamar's show last year won for music direction.
